‘Of all art, music is the most indefinable and the most expressive, the most insubstantial and the most immediate, the most transitory and the most imperishable. Transformed to a dance of electrons along a wire, its ghost lives on.

When KEF returns music to its rightful habituation, your ears and mind, they aim to do so in the most natural way they can … without drama, without exaggeration, without artifice’.

Raymond Cooke, KEF founder

Cooke was keen to experiment with new materials and technologies in order to create products with superior acoustic quality that could reproduce recordings as natural as the original performance. From the very beginning, the pioneering inventiveness of KEF loudspeakers was undeniable and now for several decades, audiophiles around the world have revered KEF for its innovative, high-performance loudspeakers.

With cutting edge technologies and machines, we are able to create visually pleasing products without losing the eye for the finest details. In Czech Republic, we produce all our turntables from scratch, by hand and in house. From the tiniest screw to the chassis, everything is done by our technicians.

We make subwoofers. That’s it. Nothing else. No distractions. Nothing to steal our focus. No kidding ourselves that we can be good at everything. No trying to conquer the whole world. We just do our best to conquer our bit of it.

Each day we come in to work in pursuit of only one intention, to produce the most raw, perfect, pure sound possible, to capture the raw intention of the artist. We use the best quality materials, employ the most exacting construction requirements. We think of the problem holistically. We pursue the chase of the perfect experience of sound with an obsessive passion and vigor. We do it because we love sound.

We believe sound can move people more than any other sense. We believe it’s the integration of the bass via the perfect subwoofer that makes everything else better. And, ultimately, there is a great deal of satisfaction to be gained from doing this well, creating something of unique quality, such that you know it is going to inspire. It makes the hard work and the obsessing over each and every detail worth all the effort. That’s our reward.

The JADIS Company is the fruit of the profound passion of André Calmettes, who has devoted his spare time to researching the most precise musical reproduction in order to get back the emotion felt during a concert. With passion, he has created prototypes which make a great impression in the audiophile circle, and it was unanimously considered superior quality as compared to the best amplifiers at that time.

Encouraged by this success, he decided in 1983 to rationalise his production and participate to the fundation of the JADIS Company. In the beginning, the amplifier was manufactured unit by unit, from the original plans, but quickly Mr Calmettes turned out his own technicians, who were able to produce electronics in accordance with his philosophy.

SME was formed in 1946 under the name “The Scale Model Equipment Company” to manufacture scale models and parts for the model engineering trade. During the 1950s SME moved away from model making to precision engineering, principally parts for aircraft instruments and business machines.

In 1959 Alastair Robertson-Aikman, the Company’s founder, required a pick-up arm for his own use and an experimental model was built. It received such an enthusiastic reception from friends in the sound industry that it was decided to produce it commercially and the first SME precision pick-up arm appeared in September 1959. At this time the company’s name was changed to SME Limited, a less committal title to suit its new activities.
